Title Research Design: Thriller

For this genre I picked the opening sequence for the show American Horror Story.

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

There are six titles displayed in this opening, 5/7 of those titles are just the cast. 1/7 is the director and the screen writer, and the last title displayed is the title of the show itself. Portraying "AHS, Cult"

2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do you they make you feel)

The images displayed were gory. The color scheme was red and yellow, the red signifying blood and the yellow representing the honey bees. even though something like bees shouldn't correlate with horror stories the layout of the different images worked to foreshadow what would later be revealed in the show

3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (Can you

tell what genre the film is)

Within the sequence there is an eerie vibe to the layout of the images to the images themselves, to the brash way each image transitions onto the next. These techniques paired with the fitting background music really completes the sequence. This also reinforces the genre.

4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The lighting, which is dark and gloomy, in a way that presents the images as if they're hiding something even darker underneath.

The use of costume in one of the last images of a guy in a bee keeper suit which correlated to the images of bees that were featured prior.

The use of setting which was an abandoned circus that reinforced the thriller genre
